SEARCH SUSPENDED FOR THREE MISSING DIVERS
SAN JUAN Puerto Rico - At 1:15 p.m. today, the Coast Guard suspended the search for three divers missing since Friday afternoon in the southern waters of the Mona Passage.
Late Friday evening, the Harbor Masters office in the Puerto Rayel Marina, contacted the U.S. Coast Guard in San Juan reporting an overdue pleasure boat with three divers aboard. Family members of the men identified them as Jose Rodriguez, 29, David Balber, 24, and Giovanni Pagan ,19 and gave details of the missing men and their 22-foot vessel.
During the Coast Guard's first search flight on Friday, the helicopter crew placed a data marker buoy (DMB) near buoy #8 in Cabo Rojo, where the men were last seen by a local fisherman. A DMB, provides real time information on wind and currents in the area and will drift similar to a person or small object in the water.
The Coast Guard continued the search Friday night and again on Saturday at first light when another DMB was placed in the water. The search pattern broadened over the next few days and a number of other law enforcement agencies participated in the search including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), PRPD's Fast Unit Response Association (FURA), Department of Natural Resources along with Customs and Border Protection and the Dominican navy.
In total the Coast Guard has flown helicopters and fixed wing aircraft during the five days with negative results.
"The official search is suspended but Coast Guard and partner agencies assets continue to patrol the Mona Passage on a regular basis, and all of these crews are aware of the missing men and will continue their vigilance," said Captain Douglas Rudolph, Commander of the U.S. Coast Guard Greater Antilles Section.
